Niedługo będzie obchodził czterdziestolecie działalności muzycznej. Nagrywa pod własnym imieniem i nazwiskiem, jako Vidna Obmana czy Fear Falls Burning. W Polsce o pamięć o archiwalnych albumach Dirka Serriesa dba Zoharum, które na bieżąco wydaje reedycje płyt Vidny Obmany. Niedawno z okazji dwudziestej piątej rocznicy wydania ukazało się The River of Appearance, wcześniej nakładem gdańskiej oficyny mogliśmy słuchać wznowień Revealed by Composed Nature(RECENZJA), The Shape of Solitude (RECENZJA), Tracers, Soundtrack for the Aquarium (RECENZJA), The Surreal Sanctuary / The Contemporary Nocturne (RECENZJA) i The Trilogy (zbioru płyt Passage in Beauty, Shadowing in Sorrow i Ending Mirage) (RECENZJA).
Ale mieszkający w belgijskiej Antwerpii Dirk Serries nadal tworzy. W niedawnym czasie ukazały się Solo Acoustic Guitar Improvisations, Recloose, Garland In Grey, Souls and Sirens, Awaken in Floating Colours, najczęściej własnym nakładem Belga lub za sprawą A New Wave Of Jazz, w którym Dirk Serries pełni rolę kuratora.
W nowym TO JEST DOBRE artysta opowiada o Solaris Andrieja Tarkowskiego, mistrzowskiej płycie Pete’a La Roki, świetnym serialu Mare z Easttown i… Dirk Serries podaje też przepis na swoje ulubione danie.
1. FILM
Andriej Tarkowski – Solaris
Całkowicie hipnotyzujący film, który po tylu latach wciąż ma w sobie moc. Obejrzałem go po zakupie cyfrowej, zremasterowanej i odrestaurowanej wersji.
Chociaż absolutnie nie podobał mi się remake Stevena Soderbergha, ten jest zupełnie innym filmem. To uczucie, efekty i aktorstwo składają się na bardzo surrealistyczny film, który wciąż trwa po obejrzeniu. Nie na co dzień, bo trzeba znosić jego powolne tempo, ale fascynujący film.
2. MUZYKA
Peta La Roca – Basra (1965, Blue Note)
W końcu sięgnął po egzemplarz reedycji fantastycznego albumu Basra perkusisty Pete’a La Roca wydanego przez Blue Note Records. Po prostu genialny album z mocną sekcją rytmiczną Pete’a La Roca z towarzystwem Joe Hendersona na saksofonie, Steve’a Swallowa na basie i Steve’a Kuhna na fortepianie. I oczywiście misternie nagrany przez Rudy’ego Van Geldera. To klasyczny post bopowy album jazzowy. Tak jak powiedziałem, z Pete’em La Rocą na pełnym swingu i świetnym Joe Hendersonem na saksofonie. Po prostu idealne od początku do końca.
3. KSIĄŻKA
Val Wilmer – As serious as your life, 1977, Profile Books ltd
Nigdy nie byłem fanatycznym czytelnikiem, ale (auto)biografie, historię muzyki i filozofię czytam od czasu do czasu. Ale nigdy na jeden raz. Książkę, którą muszę wziąć, poczytać trochę i zostawić do przetrawienia, zanim przejdę dalej. Jedną z tych książek, które bardzo lubię i do których często wracam, jest ta autorstwa Vala Wilmera.
Urocza książka o czarnej muzyce jazzowej lat 60. i 70. XX w. ze świetnymi rozdziałami na temat Ornette’a Colemana, Johna Coltrane’a i Cecila Taylora. Po prostu gorąco polecam, obowiązkowo dla każdego wielbiciela jazzu.
4. JEDZENIE
Penne alla vodka
Będąc kucharzem w domu, fajnie jest pokrótce opowiedzieć o jednym z moich ulubionych i najłatwiejszych do zrobienia dań. I jednym, które niedawno odkryłem na nowo i przypadkiem jest połączony z wodką (śmiech)
Smaczne proste danie z makaronu penne (oczywiście ugotowane al dente!), szynką (pokrojoną w małe kwadraty), purée z pomidorów, pietruszką, wódką i śmietaną.
Na patelni pieczesz szynkę (nie na chrupko), dodajesz przecier pomidorowy (dwie łyżki), gotujesz kilka minut, dodajesz pietruszkę (łyżka), dodajesz śmietanę (nie za dużo, ale na tyle, żeby sos był jeszcze wystarczająco płynny) i wódkę (4 łyżki). Smażymy nie dłużej niż 10 minut na niezbyt dużym ogniu, mieszamy z penne i… bum! Mamy ładne danie… przynajmniej według mnie (śmiech)
5. SERIAL
Mare z Easttown, 2021 HBO
Prosty, jeden z najlepszych seriali kryminalnych, jakie kiedykolwiek widziałem. Rzeczywisty, przyziemny, realistyczny i z fantastyczną główną rolą Kate Winslet. Kryminał społeczny o błyskotliwych postaciach, intrygującej fabule, wykonany z dbałością o szczegóły.

Belgian musician Dirk Serries talks about the uniqueness of Solaris, the sensationalism of Basra, Mare of Easttown and … cooking.
Soon he will be celebrating 40 years of musical activity. Dirk Serries records under his own name and surname, as Vidna Obmana or Fear Falls Burning. In Poland, the memory of Dirk Serries’ archival albums is taken care of by Zoharum, which regularly releases re-editions of Vidna Obmana’s albums. Recently, on the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the issue, The River of Appearance was released, earlier, by the Gdańsk label, we could listen to the reissues of Revealed by Composed Nature (REVIEW), The Shape of Solitude (REVIEW), Tracers, Soundtrack for the Aquarium (REVIEW), The Surreal Sanctuary / The Contemporary Nocturne (REVIEW) and The Trilogy (collection Passage in Beauty, Shadowing in Sorrow and Ending Mirage) (REVIEW).
But Dirk Serries, who lives in Antwerp, Belgium, continues to create. Recently, Solo Acoustic Guitar Improvisations, Recloose, Garland In Gray, Souls and Sirens, Awaken in Floating Colors have been released, most often by Belgian’s own effort or thanks to A New Wave Of Jazz, in which Dirk Serries acts as a curator.
In the new THIS IS GOOD, the artist talks about Andrei Tarkovsky’s Solaris, Pete La Roca’s master album, the great series Mare of Easttown and … Dirk Serries also gives a recipe for his favorite dish.
1. MOVIE
SOLARIS – ANDREI TARKOVSKY (1972)
Totally mesmerizing movie, still grand in its effect after all these years. Reviewed it after purchasing the digital remastered and restored version.
Although I absolutely didn’t dislike the Steven Soderbergh’s remake, this one is a totally different movie. The feeling, the effects and the acting contributes to a very surrealistic movie that lingers on after viewing. Not for every day as you need to endure its slow pace but a fascinating movie.
2. MUSIC
PETE LA ROCA – BASRA (1965, Blue Note)
Finally picked up a copy of the Blue Note Records’ reissue of drummer Pete La Roca’s fantastic Basra album. Just brilliant album with the strong rhythm section of Pete La Roca, accompanied by Joe Henderson on sax, Steve Swallow on bass and Steve Kuhn on piano. And of course melticulously recorded by Rudy Van Gelder. This is a classic post bop jazz album. Like I said with Pete La Roca on full swing and a great Joe Henderson fully on sax. Just perfect from beginning till finish.
3. BOOK
VAL WILMER – AS SERIOUS AS YOUR LIFE (1977)
Never have been a fanatic reader, but (auto)biographies, music history and philosophy I do read now and then. But never in one go. A book I need to pick up, read a bit and leave it there to digest before I continue. One of those books I really like and return to quite often is this one by Val Wilmer.
A lovely book on the black jazz music in the 60s and 70s with great chapters on Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane and Cecil Taylor. Just highly recommended and a must for every jazz devotee.
4. FOOD
Penne alla Vodka
Being the cook at home, it’s fun to talk briefly about one of my favorite and most easiest dishes to make. And one I recently re-discovered and by coincidence it’s with vodka in the mix.
A tasty simple pasta dish with penne (cooked al dente of course!), ham (sliced into little squares), tomato purée, parsley, vodka and light cream.
In a pan you bake the ham (not crispy), you add the tomato purée (two soupspoons) to bake a few minutes, add the parsley (a spoon), add the cream (not too much but enough to make the sauce still fluid enough) and wodka (4 spoons). Let it bake for not more than 10 minutes on not a too high fire, mix it with the penne and boom a nice dish…. at least to my taste.
5. TV SERIES
MARE OF EASTTOWN (2021, HBO)
Simple, one of the best crime tv series I ever seen. So down to earth, realistic and with a fantastic lead role by Kate Winslet. A social whodunnit with brilliant characters, an intriguing plot and with care and detail executed.
Highly recommended.
